Tarja Turunen

I was surfing and found this first video and being a huge Mike Oldfield fan I had to watch it. Featuring Tarja Turunen, the name didn’t ring a bell, but the voice intrigued me, as did the video.
That beautiful voice. I had to check my other computer with the massive storage and found this track on the 2013 album “Tubular Beats” but Tarja is uncredited on my version.

So I searched some more and duhhhh! Tarja Turunen was the lead singer and one of the founders of Nightwish the Finnish symphonic metal band. I came late to the symphonic metal genre having given up on heavy metal when Deep Purple and Black Sabbath sort of imploded and Metallica came on the scene. I had become aware of Nightwish back in 2010, even had one of their tracks on a series I was doing on the old Bearly Rambling blog featuring songs with the word “Angel” in the title. I used “Wish I had An Angel” on one of the posts.
At the time I was fascinated by their lead singer, but I guess other things came up and I forgot to follow-up, my bad.

Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen-Cabuli, generally known as Tarja Turunen or simply Tarja, is a Finnish singer-songwriter, a soprano with a vocal range of three octaves.

So this time I was determined to do justice to that fine voice.

There is a lot of music to get through, so let’s get to it.

This is the aforementioned video of Mike Oldfields track with Tarja as vocalist. A beautiful tune with wonderful vocalizing and some enticing visuals.

Moving along into the current day, very much so, Tarja’s new album “The Shadow Self” was released a week ago. A truly fine album.

Directed by Argentinean movie director Mariano Cattaneo and filmed in Buenos Aires, the video surprises with a movie like optic and a corresponding, emotional plot.
But it is not only the video clip that leaves you astonished – so does the song.
“Innocence” perfectly captures the essence of Tarja: her unique way of melting heavy rock and classical music. Adding a melancholic piano etude inspired by Chopin, a driven beat and a striking chorus, the first single from “The Shadow Self” leads the way to even more inspiring music of Tarja.
If you don’t have it yet you must get “The Shadow Self”.

Here Tarja is guesting on Within Temptation‘s first track on their 2014 album Hydra. Awesome vocals on a driving symphonic rock gem.
A terrific collaboration.

“No Bitter End”, the opening track of the prequel album “The Brightest Void”, is the first glimpse on Tarja’s new work – her heaviest to date. Surprising with massive guitar riffs, a driving beat provided by no other than Chad Smith and of course Tarja’s incredible vocals, the powerful rock tune paves the way of what is yet to come.
A true rocker, Tarja in great voice, what else do you want, or need. Rock on.

OK, let’s slow things down a bit and see what Tarja can do with a classic. And what a classic. Such a beautiful voice. Chills and goose bumps. This is from YLE TV in Finland, not sure how long ago though, maybe 2008. Just beautiful.
