Aoife O’Donovan

Aoife O'Donovan's first solo album is called Fossils.

Aoife O’Donovan hails from Newton, Massachusetts.
I don’t think she really needs any introduction, if you have any interest in Americana, folk or indie music you are surely familiar with her.
Aoife O’Donovan‘s songwriting is so good it interested Alison Krauss, who recorded Aoife’s song “Lay My Burden Down” on her album Paper Airplane. It was also used in the film “Get Low”. Aoife has had songs placed on True Blood (HBO) and Private Practice (ABC).
In 2015, Aoife toured extensively with Sara Watkins (a founding member of Nickel Creek) and Sarah Jarosz under the combined tour banner of “I’m with Her”. This combo came about after an impromptu performance at the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Anyway, let’s get to the music.

This is a red-hot new video, it just dropped, two days ago.
The awesome sounds of Aoife live on WFPK.
No backing down this is some beautiful singing, along with some damn cool guitar picking.

This time we find Aoife at Jam in the Van HQ in LA with a song from her new album. And a wondrous song it is.

Beautiful Together : An artistic journey toward hope,” took place on Tuesday, June 28. Hundreds of artists gathered to help the Orlando community heal in the wake of the Pulse shooting on June 12, 2016.
This was Aoife at her beautiful best, an amazing moment.
All is well

Talking of Beautiful Together, check out this amazing combination of talent. Here Aoife joins up with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz for a great song sung with sublime harmonies.
Crossing Muddy Waters

So we started with a live version of this song and we are going to finish with the “Official Video”. Why you may say? Because a great song is always worth hearing for than once, and Aoife’s voice will break your heart.
Oh yes, and it’s a well made and cool video.
Porch Light

This video was created by O’Donovan’s cousin Alex Henes with Alex Huninghake and Anthony Tocchio and shot around the Los Feliz in Los Angeles, CA.

the darkest night I ever seen it was the night you came to me on your
knees whispering ‘I’m sorry’
keeping time with your heartbeat, I danced along on two left feet
you kissed my cheek and left me on a city street
tell me where’d you go when you left my home on your bike alone there
was room for me on your handlebars
we could’ve seen the stars
you wanna live a life of restlessness- wander ‘round singing the blues
you find solace in the barroom girls- they got nothing to lose
you wanna live a life of loneliness- baby, so do I.
I wanna sit under the porch light and watch the yellow moon rise
if I were to let you go – how far you’d fall I’ll never know
I grab your toes and swing you like a circus show
tame the tiger, swallow fire, tiptoe ‘cross the tightrope wire out
there I hear a choir
would you help me find another stone to grind and another man to mind?
would you recognize that I might be a prize?
you wanna live a life of restlessness- wander ‘round singing the blues
you find solace in the barroom girls- they got nothing to lose
you wanna live a life of loneliness- baby, so do I.
I wanna sit under the porch light and watch the yellow moon rise

Sarah Jarosz

Sarah Jarosz is an amazingly talented singer / songwriter who hails from New York city. She first appeared on my radar when she was only seventeen, you can find those links at the bottom of this post.

Sarah has recently released her fourth album “Undercurrent”, and what an album it is. Just loving it.

Anyway let’s hear some of that music, and some from earlier times.

Sarah Jarosz plays through the rain during a performance backstage at the 2016 Old Settler’s Music Festival in Dripping Springs, TX.”
Gotta love that, playing through the rain in Dripping Springs ☺
What a beautiful voice, and a really cool song. Loving it.
This is from her amazing new album “Undercurrent”.
House of Mercy

In search of other tracks of this album, I stumbled on to this live version from the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. Poignant and beautiful.
Love this, and not because my sister is Jacqueline.

One criticism, why can’t folk hold their phones sideways, it looks so much better on YouTube. Other than that great job with the sound and visual.

Another great performance, with a voice as clear as a bell it is only fitting she should sing this great Bob Dylan song. This was just a couple of days ago at the Sinclair, Cambridge MA.
Ring Them Bells

This final one today is a treat from a couple of years ago. A brilliant version of a great song by Gnarls Barkley, a very different style.
Live from the BGS stage at Bonnaroo 2014, Sarah Jarosz performed her impeccable cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” accompanied by Alex Hargreaves, Nathaniel Smith, members of The Lonesome Trio and guitarist Bryan Sutton.

As always, please ignore the stupid “Content warning” on the old blog. One of these days/months/years it will be removed by Google/Blogger.
Anyhow these were the two features on Sarah back in the day.
