Alessi

Today we have a real treat, a truly talented singer / songwriter from west London. You may know her from her earlier nom de guerre “Alessi’s Ark”, but she is reverting to her first name, Alessi. In addition to having a terrific voice she is also a fine guitar player and an accomplished drummer.

“Named after the Italian design company, Alessi Laurent-Marke grew up in Hammersmith, London where her father, Alan Marke, is a television producer who has worked on TV shows such as Modern Toss, Snuff Box and Shooting Stars and is also the managing director of TV production company Channel X.” [Wikipedia]

Alessi is going to release a new album in the spring, and the first single from it was released in January.

So are you ready for some great music?

“The idea of being someone’s wife inspires me to no end. Recently I’ve come to believe that to be married to oneself, to be committed to nurturing our own spirits, will give us the best chance at growing truly loving relationships with our partners. Who are we if we’re aren’t present and loving to our own divine thread in this web?” Alessi
Apart from all that, this is a beautiful song brilliantly sung by Alessi, oh what a voice it’s just sublime. Great video too, very evocative of the forties. Oh, and this is the new single I mentioned.

Going back a few years, as we wander through her extensive catalog of great songs, we end up at Tramlines TV under the guise of Alessi’s Ark for another terrific song. A live acoustic performance that is a joy for the ages.
Rain

Alessi comes over to Tramlines TV to perform an exclusive acoustic performance.

Still in that era, another simple yet outstanding song from Alessi. This time with a backing guitar player and percussionist, unaccredited. A couple too many for the confined space, but they make do.

Check out her tender and charming folk-pop song “The Wire”, absolutely nothing to do with the HBO series set in Baltimore. This going back a couple more years when she was just 21. So sweet yet so mature. I’m just loving her catalog. This was captured in a live recording at BTR Live Studio.
The Wire

About Live Studio on BTR:
BTR Live Studio features a mix of breaking and established musicians playing exclusive sets in our studios, then sitting down for a chat with host Maia MacDonald. Maia is a musician and DJ who’s been involved with the music scene for a number of years and has a knack for asking the questions that musicians actually enjoy answering.

We’ll finish today with a cute video for another of her beautifully crafted songs, looks like the video was shot in the states. This one really rolls along, but I could have taken another couple of minutes, it was a tad too short.

Maggie Rogers

If you haven’t heard Maggie Rogers yet you are in for a treat.

First up let Maggie tell you a little about herself:
“For a long time, I’ve introduced myself as a banjo player from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I’m a hiker and an environmentalist. I’m an optimist. I’m loud.
I’m still all those things, but I went quiet for a few years. I cut my long hair short. I got a cat named Cat Stevens. I fell in love. I moved to New York, to France, and back.”

As you will find out when you listen to these tracks Maggie is certainly not just “a banjo player from the Eastern Shore of Maryland”, she is one of the best singer / songwriters I have heard in a long long time. She classifies her music as “movement/feelings”, there is certainly plenty of that in her songs.

Maggie Rogers is the owner of a wonderful voice, such beautiful tones.

Well enough tease, let’s get to the music.

From what I understand about this song Maggie wrote it for a Pharrell Williams hosted Masterclass with Students at NYU Clive Davis Institute.
This video is her finished project. Prepare to be amazed.

So what did Pharrel think about it? Basically he was mind blown. Watch his face.

Another truly beautiful song, just a guitar and a girl, but what a combination. She can break your heart with a song. Love it.

This one has to have been made when Maggie was a young lady at NYU. And she found the perfect site on the NYU Stairway to make a perfect recording of another of her songs. The acoustics suit her perfectly, or maybe she suits the acoustics. Either way, great song.

Finally today this is Maggie live at Berklee College of Music in 2011 when she won the Berklee Songwriting Contest for that year. I don’t know how old she is here, but look at the stage poise, and that song is something that many of the ancient songwriters would be proud to have written. This young lady is poised for stardom.

OK so I lied, but it was worth it.  It gives you a chance to listen to Maggie’s album.

Dominique Dillon de Byington, known by her stage name Dillon, is a Brazilian-born singer-songwriter and pianist, based in Germany.
Her wonderful debut album This Silence Kills was released in 2011.

She has this awesome haunting voice that goes straight for the heart, it grabs you and does not let go.

Dillon lists her genre as Sweet & Tender & Electronic, I’m down with that. Also you could add beautiful to it.

Check out this cool song performed live at @Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The song is from her upcoming album ‘Live at Haus der Berliner Festspiele’

Let’s jump into the wayback machine and catch an earlier great video by Dillon. Very innocent, yet very much the opposite. Love it.

Another awesome tune, wow this young lady can certainly produce the goods. A slight middle eastern touch. Great beats.

You can always rely on Dillon to change the style of her songs. This is a lovely song that includes so much even a touch of an oompah band and a kid chorus. This is so laid back and beautiful.

I’m gonna leave you with this video containing a recording session which has a series of interviews (in German) and some great tunes from Dillon. If like me you don’t understand German you’ll miss the interviews, but hang out for the music. It’s worth it.
