Babe Punch

📸 Jessica-Rose Lena

Meet Babe Punch. An alternative rock band from the Nottingham/Derby area in the UK.
They are still in their late teens so they have plenty of energy to burn off.

With their grunge and punk influences, they have been described as having a “venomous and angry sound” and making “a racket that goes way beyond their years”.
Babe Punch are:
Molly Godber (vocals)
Carys Jones (guitarist)
Miles Cooke (guitarist)
Abbie Roberts (bassist)
Adam Fletcher (drummer)

And they certainly live up to the name, when you first hear their sound you will certainly feel the punch. The Babe Punch that it is.

Time to check out the music, enough of the background.

So here it is. Your new favorite band. Hailing from the Midlands, pop-punksters Babe Punch are about to unleash their debut single ‘Control’ this July 7th – a riotous and confident belter of a song from the teenagers, that has already led them on to stages that include the Y Not and Dot To Dot Festivals.

And you are in luck, I have an advance sneak peak chance for you to listen to it. It’s simply amazing.

Dream Wife

Dream Wife are a very talented entertaining trio consisting of Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals), Alice Go (guitar, vocals), Bella Podpadec (bass, vocals). They hail from Brighton, London, and Reykjavik. The Dream Wife name comes from a 1953 romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

They were studying fine art and visual art at college in Brighton and they had the concept of forming a “fake girl band” as an art project for a gallery exhibition. So they wrote a few songs, recorded them, made a mockumentary inspired by Spinal Tap, and performed at the opening of the exhibition. And the rest as they say is history.

The pop punk trio – Alice, Bella & Rakel – Dream Wife formed within the walls of art university in Brighton. When they left uni that’s when the rocky roads of Dream Wife kicked in full speed: Their reputation as one of the best new live bands in London is already cemented following tours with Sleigh Bells, The Kills and their recent US triumphant stateside debut on tour at SXSW which earned them praise from NPR, DIY, Stereogum, Nylon, Entertainment Weekly etc. Aimed with razor-sharp pop tunes and a take no prisoners punk attitude they’re are known to elicit pure chaos at their raucous live shows.

Time for a tour of their amazing musical catalog, which considering how short a time span they have been a band is pretty amazing. The toughest part deciding what to include. So, lets listen to the music.

I’m just loving this recent single release. Full of bounce and fuzzy guitars. Smacks of the 80’s and 90’s but still very much 21st century. This one really rocks.

Wow! This is a great video of Dream Wife at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves. Recorded November 6, 2016. These KEXP videos are always spot on,
and this band too. With just a tinge of the B52’s without the male voice. Great guitar again, all in all an awesome experience.

This is from earlier last year, the whole group looking Pretty in Pink. But still making their great style of music. Not trying to send a message just pure punk/pop/rock music. Why are they not in the charts?

An exhilarating live performance at the Moth Club, Hackney, featuring Fever Dream. This was a few months ago and this one captures all sorts of youthful angst. I’m sure you can guess what FUU means, and if not you’ll soon find out. This is a band with balls in the Ian Dury tradition. The Moth Club never existed in Hackney when I was in that area, I guess I was before the times. Love this track.

Last one for the day.
Friday night and the lights are low, Dream Wife are the kids to know. With their fittest friends in tow, the Icelandic-English trio descend on their favorite London basement venue with studs in their leather and a twinkle in their eyes. Decked out in MCM’s punk-infused, i-D-inspired new collection, it’s all colored eyes, dog collars and glitter; hearts will race, hair will fly, and the night never has to end if you don’t want it to.
Another great track featuring Young Karin

As a parting gift let me share their first EP with you, something for the afternoon.

EP1

Chance and the Lucky Aces

chance-1a

Five years ago I featured their song “I shot a Frenchman at Agincourt” on the old blog. They’re back ! ☺
I did warn you at the time that Chance and the Lucky Aces would be releasing an EP, seems they’ve finally done it. Not the most prolific of bands, but I did hear they have a problem getting out of bed.  ☺ I know from trying to find any, that it is difficult getting them all into the same photo.

I also heard that getting them together for rehearsals was a lot like herding kittens. ☺

The current lineup for these Leeds rockers is:
Lead Vocals: Chance
Guitar: David Maguire
Bass: Eddie Young
Drums: Brian Madigan

The EP by the way is called “Breakfast With Chance and the Lucky Aces”.

So why are they here you ask, as did I. errrmm Oh yes, they have a new single from that EP that’s kind of awesome.

This song will ruin everything. I’m sure there is something about 9 months and babies in there,  ☺  but then again I could be wrong.

Anyhow, it’s a rollicking rocking little number, and the video is sort of interesting. ☺  You’re gonna love it, and you need to buy the EP otherwise they will run out of supplies (beer).

Enjoy the rocking rolling essence that is Chance and the Lucky Aces.
