This is the most awesome band I have heard in a long long time.

I know very little about them, I do know they are playing a gig  on Monday 29th May at the Eleonor Arms in Bethnal Green – wish I could be there!

The band are:
Maria Atlas ~ Vocals
Julien Brunard ~ Violin
Jon Miyawaki ~ Guitar
Jake Maun ~ Guitar
Tom Williams ~ Double Bass

Shades of Django and the Hot Club.  There is some awesome playing here, all fine musicians and the young ladies voice will break your heart.

Speakeasies’ Swing Band

The Speakeasies’ Swing Band was formed in Thessaloniki, Greece.
They are a group of very talented musicians who seemingly have a distinct joy for making wonderful swing music. They didn’t go the electro-swing way, they play their own original instruments as they would have been in a Speakeasy back in the 20’s.

The Speakeasies’ Swing Band are
Caterina Sisinni – Vocals
Panos Karnoutsos – Electric Guitar
Giannis Ntalianis – Acoustic Guitar
Panos Voulgarakis – Double Bass
Manolis Stamatiadis – Piano
Christos Papadopoulos – Clarinet
Stergios Koias – Drums

Ex/Honorary Members
Ilias Gkirmpas – Clarinet, Sax
Thanos Anagnostopoulos – Violin

The Speakeasies’ Swing Band make appearances all over Europe and have also released an EP called “Bathtub Gin” (a definite requirement for a Speakeasy), and a full length album “Land of Plenty”.

The first track below was the first song I heard from the band, and at that point I was hooked. The rest of this post is a kind of meander around their amazing collection of great tunes, the toughest part was deciding what to include (or what to leave out). So let’s get to the music.

I defy you to keep your feet still, this is one great piece of swing. In addition to the music you have a very evocative video. And the awesome sultry sexy voice of Caterina, wow. She’s got that oomph. Brilliant.

Main Direction: Aristotelis Papakonstantinou – Efharis Leontopoulou Ntomprou

Here we have a recent appearance at Obudai Nyar 2016 in Budapest, Hungary back in June. A great bouncy tune that was obviously enjoyed by the locals, with some really cool dancing in the street.

Produced by the Speakeasies’ Swing Band!

Another great song, as long as you are not afraid of gypsies, from a live show at Principal, Thessaloniki, Greece. Caterina as usual in fine voice and the band are tight as usual. I love the authenticity of their music, and the joy with which they perform it.

For some reason I always see the monster dancing in top hat and tails from the movie Young Frankenstein when I hear this song. But thankfully with this version Caterina and the band take that image away. A great rendition of a true classic. This is also from that brilliant night at Principal, Thessaloniki, Greece. I think I would have loved to have been there.

I’m gonna leave you with this gem, a great piece of music from a great movie performed by a great band.
“The Vintage News Rythm Section presents its first 1 take music show reel. With 5 cameras rolling The Speakeasies Swing Band (From Greece) performed as part of Hep Cats Holiday.”
A great period piece, the sepia print gives it that vintage touch.

Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra

? Laura Soriano

I have kind of followed the progress of the Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra a little bit over the years and was shocked to hear they were no more.

Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra (BGKO) was a project founded by clarinetist Robindro Nikolic and accordionist Mattia Schirosa. The project existed from year 2012 – 2015 creating great success while performing in Barcelona and most European countries. The last concert of BGKO was performed at Vienna KLEZMORE festival on the 8th of November 2015.

Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra were

Sandra Sangiao (Vocals – Catalunya)
Robindro Nikolic (Clarinet – Serbia/India)
Mattia Schirosa (Accordeon – Italy)
Julien Chanal (Guitar – France)
Ivan Kovacevic (Double Bass – Serbia)
Stelios Togias (Percussion – Greece)
Vroni Schnattinger (Violin – Germany)

They made such beautiful and vibrant music. A combination to my mind of Gipsy Klezmer sound and Gipsy Swing ala Django Reinhardt.

So while they are still in our minds I have to feature some of their greatest tracks.

Next up a  really happy piece of Gipsy joy. You may not understand a word, like me, but I’m sure you will enjoy it.
Cigani Ljubiat Pesnji

‘Cigani Ljubiat Pesnji’ es una canción tradicional rusa y gitana interpretada por la BGKO.

What you say? You’re heading says Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra, and so it does. Well that’s the great news Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra is now Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra. So do we want to hear the new version?
Of course we do.

What I love about their music is that it is influenced by so many different sounds from the different areas of Europe and Asia. Also many different genres of music and multiple and diverse instrumentation. It’s a joy to listen to it.
