Beatrix Players

The Beatrix Players are an amazing trio from London who make simply beautiful music, they hail from Stoke, Melbourne & Madrid.

As an intro let me borrow a bit from their official bio.
Beatrix Players are a London-based all-female trio who make florid, adventurous music that operates at the interface between folk, singer-songwriter acoustica, prog and quasi-classical baroque chamber pop. There is a light, translucent quality to the music, and yet when it is not being hushed and reverent, it has the attack and thrust, the surging dynamism, of rock. It can be soft and intimate, but it can also be fiery and intense, epic and immense. There are tempestuous passages in their music that you can imagine being delivered by traditional rock instrumentation but it is the very absence of guitars and drums that means that there is nobody out there quite like Beatrix Players

Beatrix Players are
Amanda Alvarez (cello) from Madrid, with an Australian mother
Jess Kennedy (piano, backing vocals) from Melbourne
Amy Birks (lead and backing vocals) hails from Stoke-on-Trent

They all met in London and created a masterpiece called the Beatrix Players. Yesterday they released a masterpiece, their new album Magnified.

So, shall be listen to some of their wonderful music, you know that’s why you came.

First up the brilliant first track from the album, this is an introverted ethereal awesome piece of music by any standard. So sit back and just let it flow over you. Also enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this beautiful video.

I think this one was their first single from the album. A beautifully crafted song, that swirling piano driving the whole piece. Warning if you find clown puppets scary watch/listen with your eyes closed.

Sofi Tukker

Sofi Tukker are Sophie and Tucker.
Extended version is Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern.
They are a couple of very talented artists based in New York. Tucker is originally from Boston, and Sophie was born in Germany she spent a few years in rural Canada, and then studied in Italy and Brazil. They met at an art gallery while attending Brown University, and the rest is history as they say.

So shall we get to the music?  Such amazing beautiful music it is too.

First up this song “Drinkee”, which is from the Soft Animals EP, was nominated for a 2017 Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
“Drinkee” is adapted from a poem written by the Brazilian poet, Chacal, sung sensually amidst cowbells, bongos, electric guitars and deep driving bass.
That said, this is a refreshing breath of fresh air through the musical hinterland.

Another great track from the EP, I’m just lovin’ it. So, oh so, cool. Awooo Awooo.
Swans, chicks, peacocks, it’s all for the birds. But really those piercing blue eyes.

I have to say that one of my favorite tracks from the “Soft Animals” EP is this catchy number.
It is another beautiful track that has so much going for it.

Matadora is the second single off their debut EP “Soft Animals”

So they are all great songs, let’s see how they do live. Here Sofi Tukker perform Drinkee in live concert for KCRW Summer Nights Concert Series at One Colorado in Pasadena, California on 06/04/2016. And it is delicious. Love love love it.

Live performance at ‘School Night!’ Bardot, Los Angeles. With the wonderful Betta Lemme.
I love to have the comparison between the live and the “Official Video” performance.
This is superb, if you have the chance to see them live, don’t miss it.

Our final one today, a great live version of my aforementioned favorite from the EP.
And this performance does not disappoint.

Gabriella Cohen

? Annabelle Aronica

Another day, another great singer / songwriter, meet Gabriella Cohen who hails from Melbourne in the land down under. So much talent in Australia, but then again it is a big country.

Gabriella Cohen, is one half of Brisbane band, The Furrs, who has created an orchestral, psychedelic vibe, modernizing past musical themes on her own terms.

Her debut album ‘Full Closure and No Details’ on Captured Tracks will drop on March 3rd, 2017. Can’t wait.

Gabriella is possessed of a powerful, beautiful, unusual voice. And it comes out full force on her new album.

So are we ready for some music? Let’s go.

A really unique video for an awesome song. Half speaking and half singing, she draws out her words with relish, reminiscent of poetic musicians like Lou Reed or Leonard Cohen. Taking great care in her choice of words, Gabriella Cohen’s approach to language is equal parts thoughtful and rough, as she enlivens her lyrics with an unashamed confidence of one’s own rambling inner monologue. “Downtown” is one of twelve songs featured on her album, “Full Closure and No Details”, and is a slow, enunciated verbal illustration of the anxieties that come along with being in love.

Directed and Produced by Sky Richards in collaboration with Gabriella Cohen.

Creating a good impression of a talented garage band in this next track, also from the debut album. It’s a sort of Lou Reed meets The Modern Lovers with a touch of Peter Gabriel and David Byrne in the video. Sounds odd when I say it that way but it works. Cool.
Sever the Walls

Produced, Directed & Conceived by Kate Babyshakes & Gabriella Cohen 2016.

? Jared O’Sullivan

Definite Leonard Cohen feel here, especially at the beginning. I really like this song, it seems to visit all different spots in the musical hemisphere. Gabriella is a very unique talent.
I Don’t Feel So Alive

Produced, Directed & Conceived by Kate Babyshakes & Gabriella Cohen 2016.

We are going to finish up with a couple of live performances.
Gabriella Cohen and her band stopped by the Triple R Performance Space during The International Pop Underground with Anthony Carew to play a live-to-air set to a room of Triple R subscribers. This song is entitled ‘Feelin’ Fine’, which appears on her album “Full Closure and No Details”. Great to hear her performing live.

And the real final video of today, this cool track (not on the new album) which was recorded live @ the Brighton Up Bar, Sydney in September last year.
