Mandolin Orange

Mandolin Orange are a very talented duo from North Carolina. They are purveyors of very sweet sounding bluegrass, country and folk music.

Mandolin Orange are Emily Franz (guitar, vocals) Andrew Marlin (mandolin, vocals).

Mandolin Orange released their latest album, Blindfaller, a little while back and if you don’t have it I would recommend you check it out.

So let’s get to the music.

This was the first song I heard from this talented duo, I saw the title and had to hear it. I am a rabid Bob Dylan fan and this is one of his best songs, in addition I am a big fan of Spanish leather boots. I owned a pair once, purchased in Spain and they were the greatest pair of footwear I ever owned.
And I’m so glad I stopped to check out this track, it is totally beautiful.
Their voices are totally different to each other yet they blend perfectly on the harmonies. Likewise the combination of violin and guitar is sublime. This is an Audiotree Live production.
Boots of Spanish Leather

Mandolin Orange perform “Boots of Spanish Leather” by Bob Dylan on Audiotree Live, April 15, 2014.

Next up, another Audiotree Live production, this time an original song.
The same sublime vocal and violin/guitar combinations. Beautiful song.
There Was A Time

Mandolin Orange perform “There Was A Time” on Audiotree Live, April 15, 2014.

They have a dance for my favorite spirit? This is another original track performed for Folk Alley and recorded in Saranac Lake, NY.
Just a laid back home town song. Beautiful in its simplicity.
Waltz About Whiskey

Filmed and recorded by Beehive Productions in collaboration with FolkAlley.

As we wander though their catalog of original songs one cannot help but think that they are very talented songwriters, there’s some beautiful stuff here.
Case in point this little gem. The toughest part is which songs to include and which to exclude, they’re all marvelous.
Runnin’ Red

Filmed and Edited by Alex Loops

Finally today a song from the new album, Blindfaller, recorded @ Mokum Sessions which strives to deliver in your face acoustic music videos of talented musicians, filmed in beautiful Amsterdam. A beautiful song in the perfect setting the beautiful city of Amsterdam.

Mikol Frachey

Today we meet an eighteen year old singer/songwriter from Italy.
Meet Mikol Frachey who surprisingly enough, to me at least, is a an artist in the country/Americana genre. Who knew they liked country in Italy.
Mikol has already been to her dream-town, Nashville, twice in recent years and even performed there at the Bridgestone Arena.

I don’t have too much more information, since my Italian is non-existent.  So we’ll get straight to the music, the good stuff.

A beautiful song, beautifully sung by this dark-eyed beauty. I don’t know if this young lady is a big star in Italy, but she sure should be. A well made video, cute story line.

Direzione musicale MASSIMO CAMARCA

Live di Mikol Frachey in Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, Saint-Vincent. Who’d a thunk you would find a lovely young Italian lady singing Americana songs in Italy, in English. Very impressive, I’m liking her vibe.

Here’s another from that same night in Saint-Vincent. I’m not sure if it is an original, if it is then well done Mikol. Either way well done, because it is a very cool performance.

And just because I like to see the contrast between the filmed video and the live performance, and also because it is such a great tune.
Let’s check out Mikol doing the same song I opened with, live @ Domianaz (Châtillon) Pekelin Strong Music Festival.

Sarah Jarosz

Sarah Jarosz is an amazingly talented singer / songwriter who hails from New York city. She first appeared on my radar when she was only seventeen, you can find those links at the bottom of this post.

Sarah has recently released her fourth album “Undercurrent”, and what an album it is. Just loving it.

Anyway let’s hear some of that music, and some from earlier times.

Sarah Jarosz plays through the rain during a performance backstage at the 2016 Old Settler’s Music Festival in Dripping Springs, TX.”
Gotta love that, playing through the rain in Dripping Springs ☺
What a beautiful voice, and a really cool song. Loving it.
This is from her amazing new album “Undercurrent”.
House of Mercy

In search of other tracks of this album, I stumbled on to this live version from the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. Poignant and beautiful.
Love this, and not because my sister is Jacqueline.

One criticism, why can’t folk hold their phones sideways, it looks so much better on YouTube. Other than that great job with the sound and visual.

Another great performance, with a voice as clear as a bell it is only fitting she should sing this great Bob Dylan song. This was just a couple of days ago at the Sinclair, Cambridge MA.
Ring Them Bells

This final one today is a treat from a couple of years ago. A brilliant version of a great song by Gnarls Barkley, a very different style.
Live from the BGS stage at Bonnaroo 2014, Sarah Jarosz performed her impeccable cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” accompanied by Alex Hargreaves, Nathaniel Smith, members of The Lonesome Trio and guitarist Bryan Sutton.

As always, please ignore the stupid “Content warning” on the old blog. One of these days/months/years it will be removed by Google/Blogger.
Anyhow these were the two features on Sarah back in the day.
